J. Breakfast is planned at the restaurant, 7:00h sharp with S., M., and the P. family. We hand in our keys, and 8:00h we leave Camp Satara. On our way to Hoedspruit, a few short stops when we spot animals, for the final pictures. We leave KNP through Orpen, where we arrive after two hours: a short stop to visit the loo and the shop, and then heading for Hoedspruit where we enjoy an early lunch in The Fig and Bean, before we drive further to Hoedspruit Airport. We return the car, check in and drop our luggage, and are then referred to the ‘waiting area’: the garden, frequently visited by vervet monkeys. It is all very laidback and relaxed. After some time, an airport assistant walks through the garden shouting: passengers for Cape Town, come forward for security check. Carry on luggage is going through the scanner, passports are checked, and we walk through the body scanner into the ‘gate’. When it is time for boarding (the SA Airlink Embraer is already waiting for us) we are a little confused: “No you are not on this flight'” Huh? “You are on the next flight”. We step back in the gate-area, and J spots another small SA Express plane, next to the SA Airlink Embraer. After a short while we are called for boarding, and are asked not to walk over the path, but rather ‘take the gravel’ (in other words: walk through the garden between the plants), to the plane, a Bombardier.
Ontbijt is gepland om 7 uur in het restaurant, met S., M. en de familie P. We leveren onze sleutels vast in en om 8 uur zijn we klaar om te vertrekken uit Camp Satara. Onderweg naar Hoedspruit maken een paar korte stops als we dieren zien, om nog een paar plaatjes te schieten. We verlaten het KNP via restcamp Orpen, na een korte sanitaire stop. In Hoedspruit genieten van een vroege lunch in The Fig and Bean, en rijden dan door naar het vliegveld Hoedspruit. We leveren de auto in, checken in en droppen de bagage, en worden dan verwezen naar de ‘wachtruimte’: in de tuin, waar van tijd tot tijd apen over de muur komen. Na verloop van tijd komt een luchthaven assistente de tuin in en roept: “Passagiers voor Kaapstad, klaarmaken voor de security check”. Paspoort bekeken, bagage (en wijzelf) door de scanner, en dan zijn we aan de ‘gate’. Wanneer het tijd is om te boarden (de Embraer van SA Airlink staat al klaar), is er wat verwarring: “Nee, u bent niet in deze vlucht”. Huh? ” U gaat met de volgende vlucht”. We lopen terug naar de wachtruimte van de gate en dan ziet J dat er ook een kleiner vliegtuig is, naast de Embraer. Niet veel later worden we gevraagd om te boarden, maar we mogen niet over het pad lopen (in de richting van het grote vliegtuig), maar worden verzocht door de aarde en tussen te planten door te stappen.
Once on board, it becomes even more confusing. The captain welcomes us on board of this flight to Cape Town, mentions that are some fuel problems, and that we need to make a ‘small’ detour: 45 minutes to Jo’burg to top up the fuel tank, and then off to Cape Town. It means that we will arrive after 6 pm (instead of 4 pm), and are unable to inform the people of Atlantic Pearl, our next venue. We are not amused, but what can we do?
In Cape Town we arrange the Citihopper shuttle service, and we are lucky to have a very concerned chauffeur. He drops us at 26 Ingleside Road, where everything is dark, and no one home. Our phones are not working, but the chauffeur calls the Come-to-Cape-Town office, and the contact number that we received. After 10 minutes Captain Kirwin arrives and welcomes us at Atlantic Pearl. He even takes us to a small shop to get some groceries. The S. clan arrives round 9:45 pm and we unpack, have a drink and a snack, and prepare for tomorrow: a tour to see the best of the Cape.
Eenmaal aan boord wordt het allemaal nog verwarrender. De piloot heet ons welkom aan boord van deze vlucht naar Kaapstad, maar aangezien er hier in Hoedspruit wat issues zijn met brandstof, zullen we eerst ‘even’ naar Johannesburg vliegen om de tank vol te gooien. En dan door naar Kaapstad. Het betekent dat we pas na 6 uur zullen aankomen (in plaats van tegen 4 uur), en we kunnen niet op tijd de beheerders van Atlantic Pearl informeren. Een kleine tegenvaller, maar wat moet je?
In Kaapstad nemen we de Citihopper shuttle service, en we treffen een bijzonder betrokken chauffeur, die zijn passagiers pas verlaat als hij zeker weet dat ze goed zijn aangekomen. Op 26 Ingleside Road is alles donker, en niemand thuis. Probleem, en onze telefoons werken niet, maar gelukkig helpt de chauffeur en hij gaat pas weg als het is geregeld. Captain Kirwin is de beheerder en laat ons binnen, laat alles zien en neemt ons zelfs even mee naar een kleine supermarkt, zodat we wat boodschappen kunnen doen. Tegen 10 uur komt de familie S. aan, en na een snack en drankje, gaan we naar bed: morgen vroeg op voor onze Best of the Cape tour.
