AM On July 21st we travel from Airport Schiphol to Cork, where we have booked a room in Gabriel House B&B, Summerhill. We are welcomed by our host Vincent in his living room, where he is watching ‘Hurling‘. This typical Irish Sport is only practiced in Ireland, and is a mix of rugby and hockey, and ‘almost everything is allowed, except killing the other’, according to Vincent. On Saturday morning we enjoy the Irish Breakfast and start sightseeing Cork.
We start with the ‘Cathedral Walk’, which leads us to the older part of the city: St. Mary’s Church, St. Anne’s Church, Shandon and the Cork Butter Museum. We love the colourful houses and signboards.
Op vrijdagavond 21 juli vertrekken vanaf Schiphol naar Cork, waar we gaan logeren in room 12 van Gabriel House B&B aan de Summerhill. We worden ontvangen door de manager Vincent in zijn huiskamer. Hij kijkt naar ‘hurling‘ een sport die alleen in Ierland wordt beoefend en die het midden houdt tussen rugby en hockey. “Everything is allowed, except killing the other”, aldus Vincent… Zaterdagmorgen gaan we na een Irish Breakfast Cork verkennen. De ‘Cathedral Walk’ brengt ons naar het oude deel van de stad: St. Mary’s Church, St. Anne’s Church, Shandon en het Cork Butter Museum. Onderweg bewonderen we de bont gekleurde huizen en uithangborden.

The Cork Butter Museum is very informative and we learn everything about Kerry Gold, the famous Irish butter (that we haven’t seen or tasted during our entire trip!). We have lunch in the Muse Cafe in Eason’s, a lovely bookshop. After lunch we stroll around the city, and visit the English Market and Roches. Dinner in Kelly’s and than back to Summerhill.
In het Cork Butter Museum leren we alles over Kerry Gold, de beroemde Ierse boter, (die we overigens in heel Ierland niet zijn tegengekomen!) We lunchen in het Muse Cafe in Eason’s, een heerlijke boekhandel. Daarna struinen we nog een groot deel van de stad af, gaan o.a. naar de English Market en Roches. Eten een hapje in Kelly’s en gaan dan terug naar de Summerhill.
