J. Breakfast at 8, and after a rhubarb and strawberry cobbler, we say goodbye to the Old Entrance and head for Jasper. “Weren’t you suppose to leave tomorrow…?”. The weather is nice, clear skies, sunny but a bit crisp. Our first stop today is on the Icefields Parkway, near the Athabasca Falls. Impressive roar of water. We have coffee at Sunwapta. The trip to the falls is 4 km from the road, sadly we have not enough time to do that today. Our next stop is Columbia Icefield, very cold, very impressive, but coats are definitely needed! S. borrows my coat and walks with W., N. and J. in the direction of the glacier.
Om 8 uur ontbijten we en na de cobbler met rabarber en aardbei gaan we afscheid nemen van Old Entrance en op weg naar Jasper. “Jullie zouden toch tot morgen blijven…?”. Het is mooi, helder, zonnig weer maar wel wat frisjes. De eerste stop op de Icefields Parkway is bij de Athabasca Falls. Indrukwekkend geraas van water. Bij Sunwapta drinken we koffie (de falls zijn 4 km lopen vanaf de weg, helaas hebben we daar niet genoeg tijd voor). Dan door richting Columbia Icefield, heel koud en heel indrukwekkend, maar wel een jas nodig. Sanne leent mijn jas en gaat met W., N. en J. richting de gletsjer wandelen.
Then it is time to continue our journey. We make another stop at Kitchener Mountain and Bow Lake to enjoy the view, and near Peyto Lake, where we walk towards Bow Summit where we have a view of the entire lake and the glacier. Impressive, and very good photo opportunities. The walk is an interpretive trail with lots of information about the vegetation and fauna.
Daarna weer verder richting zuiden. We stoppen nog een keer bij Kitchener Mountain and Bow Lake voor het mooie uitzicht. Bij Peyto Lake lopen we naar de Bow Summit waar we uitzicht hebben over het hele meer en de gletsjer. De weg naar boven is ook hier een interpretive trail met veel informatie over vegetatie en fauna.
Time to travel to Lake Louise, where it is insanely busy. The weather is nice, sunny, bit crisp, and sometimes a drop of rain. We decide to drive to Banff where we will have dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory. S. succeeds to buy a nice coat, and round 7:30 p.m. we travel in the direction of Radium Hot Springs. When we arrive at our new address and enter the house, it looks like it is already inhabited… we check the paperwork… and come to the conclusion… that we are one day early!!! We ran off as quick as we can, and start looking for a place to stay overnight! The Apple Tree Inn welcomes us, and when we are settled, we laugh and laugh, while enjoying a beer… We have 24 hours to entertain ourselves before we can enter the cottage…
Dan naar Lake Louise, waar het krankzinnig druk is. Het is zonnig, maar wel fris en af en toe valt er een drupje, dus besluiten we door te rijden naar Banff waar we gaan eten bij de Old Spaghetti Factory. S. slaagt er eindelijk in een jas te kopen en tegen half 8 gaan we richting Radium Hot Springs. Als we in het huisje komen, ziet her er erg ‘bewoond’ uit… We checken de papieren nog eens en komen tot de conclusie dat we een dag te vroeg zijn!!! Als een haas vertrekken we weer en gaan op zoek naar een slaapplaats: dat wordt de Apple Tree Inn, waar we er nog even over nalachen bij een blikje bier. Nu moeten we hier morgen wat ‘rondhangen’ (de weersverwachting is matig en we zijn allemaal lichtelijk verreisd) voordat we in het huisje kunnen…
