AM Breakfast is at 7 a.m. in the Inn, less extensive than we had the former days, but it is very cosy, my dear! The trip to Jasper is easy. We stop for fuel in Barriere, the little village that was completely wiped out in the bushfires of 2003. The bare branches and stems are the sad and silent witnesses of the terrible blazes of fire.
Vanaf 7 uur kunnen we al ontbijten in de Inn, iets minder uitgebreid dan we gewend zijn, maar wel gezellig, my dear! De tocht naar Jasper verloopt heel vlot. We maken een tankstop in Barriere, in 2003 weggevaagd door de wildfires. De kale stammen en takken vormen zwijgend een treurig decor.
After passing Valemount, we stop for lunch, and, after a while again to take pictures of Mount Robson. We nearly miss the first parking lot, but luckily there is a second one. Everyone jumps out of the car and heads to the best view on the mountain, only L. stays behind, since she hears strange sounds…crackling and popping in the undergrowth….from the corner of her eye she realizes there are two little black bears in the tree next to the car! Mother Bear is apparently looking for berries, making the noisy crackling sound. Everybody is demanded back in the car, and although it is difficult to photograph, nothing can spoil our day!
Voorbij Valemount maken we een stop om te lunchen; we zijn nog maar weer net onderweg, of we stoppen weer om Mount Robson te fotograferen. Leonore hoort een gekraak en geplof in het struikgewas, en ziet vanuit haar ooghoek iets bewegen in een boom: er zitten 2 babyberen in de boom! Iedereen weer terug in de auto, want Moeder Beer zit dus waarschijnlijk op de grond te rommelen. Het is lastig om te fotograferen, maar onze dag kan niet meer stuk!
We approach Jasper National Park and buy an Annual Park Pass, that gives access to all national parks in BC. In Jasper, we visit the Tourist Info and run some errands, and finish our road trip for today in Hinton, where we will stay in the Old Entrance. The B&B and TeePee rental is next to Athabasca River, and we are staying in the White Cabin, a little cottage, including everything you need, a piano (a bit out of tune, but we still play it for a while), and a front porch. Seven horses are walking in the grass round the cabins (they keep the grass short). After dinner we take the trail to Fish Creek, and walk into a deer. The weather is great, slightly clouded, and for tomorrow a warm and sunny day is expected.
We naderen Jasper National Park en kopen een Annual Park Pass, die ook toegang geeft in de andere parken. In Jasper gaan we naar de Tourist Info en naar de supermarkt en dan door naar Old Entrance in Hinton. Pal naast Athabasca River logeren we in de White Cabin. Een schattig huisje, voorzien van alle gemakken, met front porch. Er lopen ’s avonds 7 paarden los (die houden het gras kort). De piano is prettig vals, maar toch spelen we even. J. en AM. lopen de trail naar Fish Creek na het eten en komen een hert tegen. Het is heerlijk weer, licht bewolkt. Morgen wordt het een warme dag.
