J. Monday, and the first schoolday of the year for T. (pre-K) and S. (high school, The Barack Obama Academy for International Studies). We had an early breakfast and brought T. to her new class, and after that drove D. to her work. We are going to explore Butler Street in Lawrenceville, an upcoming neighbourhood with shops, galleries and coffeeshops. Unfortunately, most of the shops are closed on Monday, but we have a nice coffee and cookie in Crazy Mocha, and stroll down Butler Street, to the entrance of the Allegheny Cemetery, a historical landmark, first opened in 1845. A beautiful and quiet place with graves in all sizes and styles, and even some ‘wild life’: we spotted wild geese and a groundhog.
Maandag, vandaag begint het nieuwe schooljaar! S. start met high school (Barack Obama Academy for International Studies), en T. gaat naar pre-K, vergelijkbaar met groep I basisschool. Nadat we T. naar haar nieuwe klas hebben gebracht, en D. bij haar werk hebben afgezet, gaan we Lawrenceville verkennen. Dit is een wijk van Pittsburgh die in opkomst is: ouder vervallen huizen worden opgeknapt (wat de huizenprijzen hier behoorlijk opdrijft), en er zijn veel winkels, galeries en restaurantjes. De winkels zijn helaas gesloten op maandag, maar koffie en een chocolate chip cookie is gelukkig wel te krijgen bij Crazy Mocha, een nieuw hip koffietentje. Daarna wandelen we een stuk langs Butler Street, en komen uit bij de ingang van de Allegheny Begraafplaats, een historische bezienswaardigheid, waar in 1845 de eerste teraardebestelling plaats vond. Het is een schitterend park, met graven in alle soorten, maten en stijlen. En er is tussendoor toch nog wat leven in de brouwerij: we zien een troepje wilde ganzen en een groundhog, een soort grote marmot met een staartje (in eerste instantie dachten we een bever te zien), die, horen we later, hier veel schade aanricht.
We had a nice lunch with D. on the terrace of The Abby, good food, good company, what more do we need? After lunch a visit to the Strip District, to purchase some goodies for our upcoming trip. Cheese and olives from Macaroni, cookies, coffee and fresh fruit. We return to the house and J. turns out to be a great pool boy, cleaning the leaves from the pool with a landing-net. D. and I hit the Giant Eagle for some errands, and pick T. up from school: she enjoyed her first day in the new class, but was a bit disappointed: ‘We did not go on a field trip!’. When we arrived at Chez Bev, the pool is clean, the pool boy is already floating around, so we quickly get ready to dive in, and have fun. Dinner on the deck, and re-united with S., who told us about all her adventures during her 3-week stay in the Netherlands.
We ontmoeten D. weer tussen de middag en genieten van een heerlijke lunch op het terras van The Abby, voordat we naar het Strip District rijden, om alvast wat inkopen te doen voor onze trip later deze week. De Strip is de plaats waar ook de betere restaurants hun inkopen doen. Een levendige straat met voor elk wat wils. Wij gaan eerst naar Macaroni, voor kaas en olijven, en halen daarna nog koffie, koekjes en vers fruit. Daarna terug naar Chez Bev, waar Jack een nieuwe carrière kans ziet: pool boy! Met een schepnetje vist hij alle blaadjes uit het zwembad. D. en ik doen nog een laatste boodschap bij de Giant Eagle en gaan dan T. ophalen van school: ze had een leuke eerste dag in haar nieuwe klas, maar was toch ook een tikkie teleurgesteld: ‘We hebben geen schoolreisje gemaakt!’. Als we thuis arriveren, is het zwembad schoon, en drijft de pool boy al round op een matrasje. We springen allemaal in het water en hebben dikke pret. Daarna heerlijk eten op het terras, en horen we de verhalen van S., die drie weken met een internationaal kamp in Nederland is geweest!
Tuesday is reserved to do some shopping, and we scheduled a trip along a scenic route: the route took us away from downtown Pittsburgh, to avoid traffic, and through the fields south of the city. Lovely drive going up and down through the rolling landscapes. First off to shop for some crafts and quilt stuff – at the Waterfront (Michaels) and at Claremont Boulevard (Jo-Ann’s), so AM was happy… and then off to the Tanger Outlet. It is really hot today, with temperatures in the high 80’s, so we were happy to step into the stores with their airconditioning. In the car it was 100+F when we stepped in again, but with the windows open and later on, the AC blasting at full, we cooled it down pretty quickly. Luckily we knew there was a pool to jump in to to cool us down, upon arrival at Chez Bev’s… D. and AM however, decide that this is the moment for a nail-do and went off for pedi’s and mani’s. We had loads of fun, especially when the family came home as well, and the puppy was running around the pool, on the edge whenever we swam up and down. Kind of weird, when you look up at the end of a lane, and see a slobbering dog watching down on you…
Dinsdag hebben we gereserveerd om wat inkopen te doen, en we plannen de stops langs een toeristische route. Een mooie rit door het prachtige landschap, wat een ruimte is hier. De eerste stops zijn Waterfront (Michaels), en Clairmont Boulevard (Jo-Ann’s) zijn bedoeld om wat mixed media- en quiltmateriaal te kopen, dus AM is helemaal in haar sas……en dan richting the Tanger Outlet. Het is vandaag erg warm, met temperaturen rond de 30 graden Celsius, dus het is geen straf om te air-conditioned winkels in te gaan. Als we terug komen bij de auto staat de thermometer op 38 graden…..we stappen toch maar in, en met de ramen geopend, en de airco op de hoogste stand, is het snel alweer goed uit te houden. Gelukkig weten we dat er een zwembad op ons wacht…D en AM hebben een andere noodzakelijke bezigheid: een bezoeken aan de nagelsalon voor pedi’s en mani’s!
At one point the 100-pound puppy stepped a little too close to the edge, slipped, and fell in… And the dog cannot swim! He tried to tread water, with large eyes and a scared look on its face, but hardly made it, with its butt down underwater, not using its hind legs… We needed to help it a bit to get to the edge again, to step up the small ladder and back on land… Very funny!
Met de hele familie in het water is het weer dikke pret, en de honden vinden het ook reuze spannend. Vooral de puppy Finn rent als een bezetene om het zwembad heen. Soms een raar gezicht: je zwemt een baantje, en als je boven komt aan de rand van het bad zit je bijna met je neus op een hondenkop! De puppy is bij tijd en wijle zo onhandig: soms verstapt hij zich en valt in het water, maar hij kan niet zwemmen: met grote bange ogen probeert hij vooruit te komen, maar met zijn achterlijf onderwater, en zonder gebruik te maken van zijn achterpoten komt hij niet ver! We helpen hem dus maar een handje om bij het trappetje te komen en met wat hulp en een kontje staat hij weer op de kant….hilarisch!
