Aan het ontbijt maken we kennis met Chris, onze host. Terwijl de eieren klutst, nemen wij vast een kopje koffie in de ochtendzon op het deck, waar we ook ontbijten.
When we go down for breakfast, we meet Chris, our host. As he is scrambling the eggs, we enjoy our morning coffee on the deck outside the kitchen. Breakfast in the morning sun, what’s more to wish for?
Vandaag gaan we Harper’s Ferry verkennen. En leren weer wat over de geschiedenis van de USA, met name over John Brown. Wie kent niet het lied dat we op school leerden “Glory, glory, hallelujah, his soul goes marching on”. Nooit geweten wie John Brown was. Maar na een bezoek aan Harper’s Ferry weten eindelijk waar het over gaat! Er is zelfs een liedje over Harper’s Ferry, waarin historische feitjes zijn verwerkt.
Today we are going to explore Harper’s Ferry. And learn more about the history of the USA, especially some details about the Civil War, and in particular about John Brown. We learned the song in school “..Glory, glory, hallelujah, his soul goes marching on”, but no-one told us what it is about! After visiting Haper’s Ferry we know who John Brown was, and his significance in history. There is even a song about Harper’s Ferry, with some of the historical details in it.
Er is één ding waar je niet onderuit komt als je in Harper’s Ferry bent: het getoeter van de trein! Ieder uur komt er een goederentrein langs (en het schijnt dat ook Amtrak hier dagelijks stopt), die dat luid toeterend aankondigt. Dag En Nacht…..Het getoeter is een ‘safety measure’ zo horen we van Chris – op dieren en wandelaars op het spoor te waarschuwen. Aan de andere kant: kijken naar zulke gigantische lange treinen blijft toch ook leuk. Tel de wagons maar even!
If there is one thing you can’t miss in Harper’s Ferry it’s the trains blowing their horns! Huge cargo trains pass every hour (and I read that Amtrak is also passing every day), and the horns announce their arrival. Day And Night….It is a safety measure, we learn from Chris: to warn animals and people walking on the train tracks. On the flip side, watching trains, especially these huge ones is never boring! Count the carts!
We wandelen vandaag tussen Potomac River en Shenandoah River, en zelfs een ieniemienie stukje van de Appalachian Trail, die, zo horen we in het Visitor Centre 2168 mijl lang is. Je kunt de trail in 6 maanden lopen, maar dan moet je wel flink doorstappen! Onze wandeling voert ons langs het John Brown’s Fort, Jefferson Rock, Harper Cemetery.
We hike between Potomac River and Shenandoah River, and even a teeny-tiny bit of the Appalachian trail, which is 2168 miles long, as we learn in the Visitor Centre. You can ‘do’ the trail in 6 months, but it deserves some perseverance! During today’s hike we furthermore visit John Brown’s Fort, Jefferson Rock, Harper Cemetery.
Na ruim 3 uur wandelen gaan we lekker lunchen op het terras van Battle Grounds Bakery. Een Mountain Top en Potomac sandwich met een ‘freshly squeezed lemonade’. Heerlijk! Het begon vandaag strakblauw, in de zon is het best warm, maar er komen ook wat wolken. In de schaduw is het wat frisjes.
After about 3 hours of hiking and taking pictures, it is time for lunch on the terrace of Battle Grounds Bakery. A cold Mountain Top and hot Potomac sandwich with ‘freshly squeezed lemonade’. What a treat! We started the day with a clear blue sky, it is really nice and warm in the sun, but some clouds are showing up, making it less comfortable.
