J. Again, we had to get up early this day… M. has arranged an all-day guided tour around the Cape! Our bus would be leaving the Hilton Hotel at 8 am, so we drove to down-town Cape Town around 7:30h, where we parked the car under the Hilton. Our guide/chauffeur today is Marcel, also known as Mad-Max, ‘ladies and gentleman, hahahahaha’. He is very proud to drive us around in his brand new bus, with on board wifi! He knows a lot about the peninsula and its history, and does not stop talking, and asking our attention for ‘the landscape (he pronounces it as ‘lens cap’, leading to some confused photographers) on the right, ladies and gentlemen, is very particular, hahaha’. The reason for leaving so early is to arrive at the spots worth seeing, before the buses loaded with tourists arrive.
Wederom een vroege start van de dag….M. heeft een dagtochtje met een bus rond de Kaap geregeld. De bus zal om 8 uur vertrekken vanaf het Hilton Hotel aan de Buitengrachtstreet. Dus rijden we om 7:30 richting centrum, waar we de auto parkeren onder het hotel. Onze gids/chauffeur vandaag is Marcel, die bekend is als Mad-Max, ‘ladies and gentlemen, hahahahaha’. Hij is trots als een pauw op zijn gloednieuwe bus, met wifi aan boord. Max weet heel veel van de geschiedenis van het schiereiland, en hij spreekt onophoudelijk, en vraagt regelmatig om onze aandacht voor het bijzondere landschap (hij spreekt het uit als lenskap, wat leidt tot enige verwarring), aan linker of rechterzijde, en lacht er smakelijk bij, hahaha!
Max stops the bus regularly giving us the opportunity to take pictures. Group pictures are made at Cape of Good Hope, the most southern point of the country, and at Cape Point we climb or rail (incline) to the lighthouse on top. We continue our trip (after some hassle, since D.’s phone is missing, but luckily found!) in the direction of Simon’s town, the basis of the SA marine. Our next stop is to visit the penguins at Boulders Beach. Max makes reservations for lunch at the restaurant Seaforth.
We stoppen regelmatig om foto’s te maken of even rond te kijken. Max maakt een groepsfoto bij Kaap de Goede Hoop, het zuidelijkste puntje van Zuid-Afrika, waarna we doorrijden naar Cape Point. Daar kunnen we met het treintje, of te voet, naar boven waar de vuurtoren staat, om te genieten van het uitzicht. Dan vervolgen we de reis (na wat consternatie omdat D haar telefoon kwijt is, die gelukkig weer wordt gevonden) richting Simon’s town (waar de thuisbasis van de marine van Zuid Afrika is) en Boulders Beach, om de pinguïns te bezoeken! Intussen regelt Max voor ons de lunch bij Seaforth.
After lunch we travel further, in the direction of Stellenbosch. During the trip we pass the townships and compounds where 1,5 million people live. It is a shocking contrast to the wealth that is literally around the corner. Max grew up in the townships and tells about the community, and how it is to live there.
Na de lunch reizen we weer verder, in de richting van Stellenbosch. Gedurende de reis passeren we de townships en compounds, waar 1,5 miljoen mensen wonen. Het contrast met de welvaart, die letterlijk om de hoek is, is schokkend. Max is hier opgegroeid en vertelt over de gemeenschap, en hoe het is om daar te wonen.
We visit the Zevenwacht Vineyard, for a tour, wine & cheese tasting. The main building shows typical Dutch influence. Our final stop is in Stellenbosch, (with lots of Dutch names!) where we have time to buy souvenirs. Back to Cape Town Hilton, and then to Camps Bay. We walk to the ocean and have dinner in Italian restaurant Col’Cacchio.
We brengen een bezoek aan de Zevenwacht Wijngaard voor een rondleiding, wijn en kaasproeverij. Het hoofdgebouw heeft duidelijk Hollandse kenmerken. Ook Stellenbosch, onze laatste stop, waar we souvenirs kunnen kopen, staat bol van de Nederlandse namen. Dan weer terug naar Kaapstad, en Camps Bay. We wandelen naar de oceaan en eten in het Italiaanse restaurant Col’Cacchio. Een smakelijke afsluiting van een mooie dag.
