J. Today, Friday is all about relaxing – after breakfast we prepare for the beach, it is almost around the corner of our address at Cory Lane. Everybody have their own beach-chair-backpack, very convenient! We find a nice spot, close to the coast line (it is almost low tide). And then it is just a matter of relax, in your chair with a book, or in the waves. The beach is sandy, like we have in the Netherlands, but the sand seems to be more loose, even in the water, you seem to sink into it more easily.
On the beach, there are lots of seaweeds, (dead) horseshoecrabs, some pieces of driftwood, and shells. The water is very clear, nice temperature and we spend some time, playing in the waves and looking for shells. Unfortunately, the weather is changing, and when it starts to rain, we return to the house, where we spend the remainder of the afternoon on the deck, until it’s time for Chatham’s highlight of the week: the Friday Evening Band Stand Concert. We arrive early, to save a good spot in the park (simply leaving our chairs there), and do a bit of shopping before the concert starts: T-shirts, hoodie, chocolate and sweets, in short: everything you need to start the weekend. And then it is time to go the park, where people are getting ready for the music: tonight’s theme is all about women: today is exactly 96 years since women were allowed to vote. The conductor of the band tells a bit about the history of the Band and the female members (the oldest turned 90 today!), the president, and the coordinator, and the choice for music by female composers and performers. The program contains something for everybody, and changes per week, although some parts of the program never change: there is music, a march along (where visitors are invited to come forward and march around the bandstand (must be really fun for the band members!); more music, and an opportunity for dancing around the bandstand, and a sing along (the conductor loves to sing himself and it is sure he wants us to know that!). But the climax of the night is definitely the Bunny Hop. The audience all come forward, and the conductor gives instructions for those who are new: we have to stand in a line, and will move counter clockwise around the band stand; than we hold the person in front of you at his waist and off we go: right arm/leg out (2x), left arm/leg out (2x), step forward, step backwards, and hop, hop, hop. It is great fun! Then the National Anthem, and the concert is over. After a slice of pizza we return to the house and finish our final evening here with another game of Kwatro. Although A. really did his best, in the end he was not able to beat J., but can be proud to be the runner up!
Vandaag, vrijdag, is alweer de laatste dag en het belooft een heerlijk relaxdagje te worden. Na het ontbijt maken we ons klaar om naar het strand te gaan, dat ongeveer om de hoek van Cory Lane ligt. Iedereen krijgt zijn eigen ‘rugzakstoel’, reuze handig! Op het strand zoeken we een fijn plekje vlak bij de kustlijn (het is bijna laag water), en klappen onze stoeltjes uit. En dan: gewoon lekker niets doen, of een beetje spelen in de golven. Het strand is een zandstrand, net als in Nederland, maar het zand lijkt veel losser, je zakt er makkelijk in weg, ook vlak bij en in het water. De temperatuur van het water is heerlijk, absoluut niet koud. Er is veel te zien op het strand: grote plukken zeewier (anders dan wij kennen), overblijfselen van horseshoecrabs (soms reusachtig!), hout en schelpen. Kortom genoeg te zien en te beleven. Helaas is de vreugde niet van hele lange duur: er komen donkere wolken, en het begint te regenen. Dus pakken we ons boeltje op en gaan terug naar huis waar we ons verder vermaken, tot het tijd is voor het hoogtepunt van de week in Chatham: het concert in de muziekkoepel in het park! We gaan er al vroeg naar toe om een goed plekje te bemachtigen (dat wil zeggen: je legt gewoon je stoeltje neer waar je wilt zitten), en gaan daarna gezellig winkelen: t-shirts, vest, chocola en andere zoetigheden: alles wat je nodig hebt voor een goede start van het weekend! Dan is het tijd om ons plekje op te zoeken in het park, want het gaat bijna beginnen. Kinderen rennen en dansen rond met ballonnen en saber lights, er wordt gepicknickt en gelachen. Het programma van het concert, dat gedurende de zomermaanden iedere vrijdagavond plaatsvindt, wisselt per week qua samenstelling, maar er zijn vaste onderdelen. Het thema van vanavond is ‘vrouw’ omdat het op de dag af 96 jaar geleden is dat de vrouw stemrecht kreeg. Dus zet de dirigent de dames van het orkest en de orkestorganisatie eens extra in het zonnetje, en is er muziek van vrouwelijke componisten en performers. Vaste onderdelen zijn de March along – het publiek wordt uitgenodigd om naar voren te komen en te marcheren rondom de bandstand: eerst tegen de klok in en dan met de klok mee. Aan de gezichten van de bandleden te zien hebben ze er dikke pret in. Dan is er een sing-a-long, een walsje (ja kom danst u maar), en meer muziek, maar het hoogtepunt is toch echt de Bunny Hop. Het publiek wordt uitgenodigd om naar voren te komen en achter elkaar te gaan staan. Dan moet je de persoon voor je bij zijn middel vast pakken en het begint: rechter arm/been uit (2x), linker arm/been uit(2x), stap naar voren, naar achteren en hop, hop, hop. En dat alles op de maat van de muziek. Het moet er vast heel grappig uit zien. Tot slot the National Anthem (neus in de lucht en rechterhand op het hart en meezingen maar!) en dan is het alweer voorbij. We genieten nog even van een puntje pizza en gaan weer richting Cory Lane om onze laatste avond af te sluiten met een potje Kwatro. Hoewel A. echt heel erg zijn best doet om J. te verslaan, moet hij genoegen nemen met de 2e plaats, maar dat is zeker een prestatie!
