J. Today, we start the next part of our trip: we are going West, and our destination for today is Milford. The sun is out, the sky is blue and when we leave it is already 27 degrees Celsius. We have 326 miles to go, but traffic is so busy, and on the I-84 we have a delay of over 2 hours to cover 17 miles(!), in slow moving traffic… It is not clear why (one sign mentions a lane to be closed after exit 10, but this does not seem to be correct), but we finally find out: on a service place on the highroad is a Farmers Market, and that seems to attract many visitors! We have brought some apples and grapes and bought water, which helps us to survive a day in the car. The highest temperature we experience today is 34 degrees Celsius. After this exit, the traffic jam is over, and we can travel on normal speed again. Parts of the road remind us of Belgium, they really need some road work! Today we travel in four States: Massachusettes, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania. We make a short stop at the Connecticut Welcome Center, just to find out that their bathrooms are really filthy. Around 6 pm we arrive in Milford, and check in at the Dimmick Inn, the local pub and restaurant. The room is just what you expect here: cracking floors, not all straight, and lovely ladies on the walls in the toilet, but it is clean and spacious. After a nice dinner on the porch, and a stroll around Milford (it is really small), we go to bed early. Not that we are getting any sleep, because in the bar downstairs, they make a lot of noise, and with a wooden old building like this – yeah, they came through loud and clear. Tomorrow is part 2 of our trip, another 300 miles to go before we hit The Pitt!
Onze verblijf op Cape Cod zit erop, vandaag gaan we verder reizen, richting west. Onze bestemming is Milford. Het is zonnig, blauwe lucht, hier en daar een wolkje, en als we vertrekken is het kwik al opgelopen tot 27 graden. We moeten vandaag zo’n 326 miles overbruggen, dat zou moeten kunnen in 6 uur, maar we komen in een vreselijke file terecht, die meer dan 2 uur duurt en ons slechts 17 mijl verder heeft brengt. Gelukkig hebben we appels, druiven en water bij ons, dus we overleven het wel. De oorzaak voor de file is onduidelijk: er staat ergens een melding dat er een rechter rijbaan zou zijn afgesloten na afrit 10, maar dat blijkt niet correct. Uiteindelijk wordt het duidelijk: op de service plaza (een food/gas court langs de snelweg) is vandaag een Farmers Market: en daar moet iedereen kennelijk bij zijn! Na deze afrit is de file ineens opgelost en kunnen we onze reis met wat meer snelheid vervolgen. We reizen vandaag door 4 staten: Massachusettes, Connecticut, New York en Pennsylvania. Bij het Connecticut Welcome Center even een korte sanitaire stop (brrr, wat een vieze toiletten!). Snel verder richting Milford, waar we rond 6 uur arriveren. We logeren in de Dimmick Inn, en het is precies wat je kunt verwachten in een dergelijke gelegenheid: krakerige houten vloeren, beetje aflopend, vrolijke dames als behang op het toilet, maar schoon en ruim. We eten op het terras en maken nog even een wandelingetje voor we vroeg onder de wol kruipen, eh, nou ja, niet letterlijk, want de temperatuur is nog steeds bijna 30 graden! En van slapen komt ook nog niet veel, want in de bar beneden is het reuze gezellig, en in zo’n oud houten gebouw, ja, precies, alles was luid en duidelijk te horen… Morgen dag 2 van onze trip, nog 300 mijl te gaan tot aan The Pitt!
