AM Wednesday, Thursday, Friday…
Weather expectations for Wednesday/Thursday are very warm (27-30 centigrade), and so we have decided to relax a bit, enjoy sitting on the balcony and reading. On Thursday we start preparing for the next part of our trip. Cleaning, laundry, packing and trying to get rid of the empty bottles (without success, paying deposit money is no problem, but getting it back… that’s another story! Apparently, Radium has no official recycling depository…)
Omdat het weer voor woensdag en donderdag erg warm is voorspeld (tussen 27 en 30 graden), hebben we geen echte plannen gemaakt. Het is ook wel lekker om gewoon wat te ontspannen, lekker te zitten op de balkons en te lezen. Donderdag alvast een beetje voorbereiden voor morgen. Wassen, inpakken en opruimen en proberen de lege flessen te slijten (wat niet lukt, je mag er wel statiegeld voor betalen, maar inleveren… da’s weer een heel ander verhaal).
The next episode of our road trip is in the direction of South and West. We head for Osoyoos, and pass a variety of landscapes. Lots of fruit trees, and vineyards, and stalls near the road that well the local produce. The roads are not crowded, and we enjoy the journey. Lunch in Creston and then to a special B&B… Osoyoos is located in Okanagan Valley, however in a small strip is an area with desert climate. The sky is however very cloudy and it isn’t getting any better. We hear on the radio about bushfires in the US (Washington State), and since the wind is coming from the south, the smoke is partly travelling in our direction. According to the visitor’s information, it only rains 1.5 days per year in this area. Believe it or not… we got the rain… and the thunderstorms…
Vrijdag gaan we onze reis weer vervolgen richting Osoyoos. Een prachtige tocht naar het zuiden en westen. We komen door de streek waar veel fruitbomen en wijngaarden zijn. Veel kraampjes langs de weg waarin alles te koop wordt aangeboden. Vaak kleine wegen, maar niet al te druk. We lunchen in Creston en gaan dan door in de richting van de Observatory B&B, die gelegen is in Okanagan Valley, in een strook met woestijnklimaat. Het is bewolkt en de bewolking lijkt ook steeds zwaarder te worden. Volgens de informatie regent het hier maar 1,5 dag per jaar, en je gelooft het niet… dat hebben wij dan weer…
The Observatory B&B is interesting, it is owned by Jack and Alice Newton, and carries a well equipped Observatory. Jack Newton’s hobby is astronomy and in particular taking the most impressive pictures of supernovae. The rooms in the B&B all have astronomic themes: we stay in the Eclipse Suite. Apart from three bedrooms, there is a huge television set in the living room, and we enjoy a bit of the opening of the Summer Olympics. During the nights, guests are invited to climb the Observatory and have a look at the firmament, except when it is raining… But no worries, the Newton’s have their own cinema on the premises, and we are invited to watch some informative documentaries on the stars, planets, and sun. The next morning, when the weather is slightly better, we are allowed to visit the Observatory.
De Observatory B&B is geen doorsnee verblijf, het huis maakt deel uit van een heuse sterrenwacht. Jack Newton’s hobby is astronomie en in het bijzonder het vastleggen van de beelden van supernova. De kamers zijn ingericht in astronomische thema’s, bij verblijven in de Eclipse Suite. Behalve drie slaapkamers, is er in de living room een giga televisie, waarop we naar beelden van de opening van de Olympische Spelen kijken. In de avonden zijn de gasten van de B&B welkom om een kijkje te komen nemen in de sterrenwacht; door het slechte weer is er vanavond helaas niet veel te zien, maar geen nood: de Newton’s hebben hun eigen bioscoopzaal (inclusief relaxte stoelen), en dus worden we getrakteerd op informatieve documentaires over het heelal, sterren en planeten. De volgende morgen na het ontbijt, is het weer beter, en mogen we alsnog een kijken nemen bij de telescoop.
